The Green-Eyed Girl

a green-eyed girl went walking
through the woods one summer night
when she came across a clearing
bathed in soft moonlight

she found some Fair Folk dancing
round a ring of mushrooms red
and when they caught her watching
come dance with us they said

now her mother had told her stories
about the folk when she was small
but they laughed and smiled so sweetly
nothing like the tales at all

the green-eyed girl joined the dancing
throwing caution to the wind
she laughed and smiled as she spun
round and round again

as the night grew later
her feet began to ache
but when she tried to stop to rest
her body would not obey

the Fair Folk laughed and smiled
with bright unnerving eyes
why would you want to leave us?
we're having such a merry time

the green-eyed girl kept dancing
spinning through her tears
she begged them Please, just let me go
but her words fell on deaf ears

she lost track of the hours
spinning ‘round the mushrooms red
she danced clean through her brand new shoes
and her feet blistered and bled

the Fair Folk laughed and smiled
as she danced and cried in pain
and when the sun came up she fell
to never dance again
